Extra Credit -- 6th, 7th, 8th Grade

Once per each nine weeks, you may have the option of completing a five-paragraph essay for extra credit. The five-paragraph essay shall be of a persuasive nature and needs to be relevant to social studies. Possible topics are listed below. Students can earn up to 50 points of extra credit for completing such an essay. The rubric for the essay is can be found here.



  • Should every able-bodied American citizen be required to serve for a certain period of time in a branch of the military service? Discuss.
  • Should American citizens be able to own and carry firearms? Give reasons as to why or why not.
  • If the average human life span were increased to 200, what major societal changes would you expect? Discuss.
  • Do you believe that it is the responsibility of the young to provide financial security to the elderly? Why or why not?
  • Many college freshmen complain that they have never really learned how to study. What pointers could you give to help people with poor study habits?
